Yesterday was the second week the Spring IM was held. I was unable to attend because I was at Cabrini the whole day. I had already told Mr. Fitzpatrick that I was unable to attend because of this reason. I plan on attending next Sunday to complete another 4 hours of community service. The kids are great and they are very eager to learn the ways of soccer and how to pass, kick, and shoot the ball no matter what age they are. I feel as though I interact with them better because I'm a kid as well, but I am just bigger. They love having me as a coach because my rules are basically have a good time and give everyone a chance.

Over this spring break the Spring IM was canceled due to the fact that it was on Easter and the kids and their parents were busy having Easter dinner. So this weekend i plan on attending the Spring IM and helping Mr. Fitzpatrick coach the younger and older kids.

Last Sunday i attended my first Spring IM. It was pretty fun to teach young children how to pass, shoot, and dribble the ball. Mr. Fitzpatrick had said my drills were very helpful for the kids because it put all three things together. I even taught some of the older kids how to do some tricks with the ball. They were very happy to try them on their teammates. I worked for a total of four hours and Mr. Fitzpatrick was very thankful i could stay for both sessions.

Research Topic: Parental Pressure on Children
Focusing Statement:
Essential Background Information for Introduction:
Potential Hook/Grabber (Story, anecdote, quote about your issue):
Topic 1: Parental pressure at home
Explanation
Homework
Evidence/Quotes:
Parents tend to make sure their kids never leave the house because they want to “protect” them from certain things. This is causing kids to have no social life therefore causing them to know nothing about the outside world.
(William Dougherty)
Explanation
Chores
Evidence/Quotes:
If a kid is cleaning his room and he misses a pair of pants the parents yell and him to pick it up because they need everything perfect because they want their house presentable even though no one is coming to the house.
(James White and Gerald Masterson)
Explanation
Schedule
Evidence /Quotes:
Kids like to play outside with their friends. Their parents give them a time to be home so they can have dinner or something. The kid shows up two minutes late and the parents get furious at him for basically being on time.
(William Dougherty)
Topic 2: Parental pressure at school
Explanation
Grades
Evidence/Quotes:
“I have counseled parents who tell me their child is so bright that they are capable of getting all A's and punish them if they don't. They also expect their children to enroll in every honors or advanced-placement class they can, run for student government office and go out for a sport” (Mitchell Rosen).
Explanation
Course Levels
Evidence/Quotes:
“They also expect their children to enroll in every honors or advanced-placement class they can, run for student government office and go out for a sport” (Mitchell Rosen).
Explanation
Tutoring Access
Evidence /Quotes:
Parents love to see their kids succeed, but the kids like to have their own time to themselves. The parents make them go to tutoring if they have grades less then what is expected out of them which takes away their free time. This creates a bad relationship between the kids and parents.
(James White and Gerald Masterson)
Topic 3: Parental pressure during sports
Explanation
Push to Perfection
Evidence/Quotes:
“The pressure from parents, coaches and kids is to be better younger, pushing 70 percent of the kids to give up sports by age 13” (Nancy M. Snyderman)
Explanation
Play time
Evidence/Quotes:
Overly involved parents love to see their child play the sport they are playing. If the coach is not giving their child the amount of playing time the parent wants than the parent and the coach are going to have a problem.
(Mitchell Rosen)
Explanation
Refs/calls
Evidence /Quotes:
The ref makes a bad call on a parent’s kid. The parent becomes enraged because of the call and gets in the ref’s face. This causes the overly involved parent a rage that embarrasses the kid.
(Nancy Snyderman)
Topic 4: Parental pressure on a kids social life
Explanation
Meddle
Evidence/Quotes:
"Things we try to do often backfire, making things worse for a child” (Time Magizine).
Explanation
Choose Friends
Evidence/Quotes:
Parents try to persuade their children into choosing friends to their standards. This creates problems with the children’s choices because it makes them believe the people they choose are not good enough for them.
(Mitchell Rosen)
Explanation
Embarrass Kids
Evidence /Quotes:
Parents enjoy picking their kids up in front of their friends in an angry way. They treat them differently if their friends seem to be bad kids.
(Time Magazine)
Topic 5: What we can do to prevent Parental outrage towards their children
Explanation
Set rules and regulations towards Parental outbursts
Evidence/Quotes:
Rules and regulations are a good way to keep the game in line and the parents in the crowd also in line.
Explanation
If out of hand ban parents from sporting events for a while
Evidence/Quotes:
The ref and coaches should have the opportunity to throw parents out of a games area if they are behaving in a bad way.
Explanation
Have parents sign agreements before seasons
Evidence /Quotes:
Parents should sign agreements to make sure they behave at sporting events.

I recently called Mr. Fitzpatrick about helping him with the Spring IM. Unfortunately i was unable to attend the Spring IM last Sunday at 11. I have gotten a lot of research done but i need to focus more on the hands on part of this project.
